US election campaign: Harris ready for another TV duel – Trump is cautious

According to polls, Harris cut a better figure than Trump in the first TV duel. The Democrat is challenging the Republican again. But will there be a second duel?

Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris has officially agreed to another TV duel against her Republican opponent Donald Trump – but it is uncertain whether this will actually take place. “Vice President Harris is ready for another opportunity to share the stage with Donald Trump and has accepted CNN’s invitation to a debate on October 23,” her campaign said in a statement.

Trump has so far rejected another TV duel and reiterated this stance after Harris’ confirmation on CNN. “She’s been in one debate. I’ve had two,” he said during a campaign appearance in the state of North Carolina. “It’s too late for another debate. I would like to in many ways, but it’s too late.”

Harris demanded a second duel

The two had a heated exchange of blows on September 10th during a TV duel hosted by ABC – the Democrat repeatedly drove the Republican into a corner. In a quick poll by CNN, 63 percent of respondents saw her as the winner, compared to 37 percent for Trump. The ex-president, however, argued that he had won the television debate.

Harris subsequently demanded a second duel, but Trump announced that he no longer wanted to take part in any further debates. He emphasized that he had already fought a first TV duel against the previous Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden and then a second one against Harris.

“It would be unprecedented in modern history for there to be only one debate in the presidential election,” argues Harris’ campaign team. The argument goes that voters deserve another TV duel to get an idea of the “competing visions for America.”
