Ukraine War: London gives Kiev loan over 2.74 billion euros

Great Britain gives Ukraine a loan of 2.74 billion euros to strengthen its defense. The two finance ministers Rachel Reeves and Serhii Marschenko signed the agreement on Saturday in an online ceremony. The loan is a sign of “unshakable support for the Ukrainian people,” it said. The British Prime Minister Keir Strandmer had previously warmly welcomed the Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj in London.

The loan is to be repaid with profits from the frozen Russian assets. Ukraine has been defending itself against a Russian attack war for years.

On Friday, US President Donald Trump and Selenskyj in Washington had violated the cameras in front of running cameras. Supported by his Vice President JD Vance Selenskyj, Trump accused lack of gratitude for US military aid and disrespect. At the same time, he threatened to end the US support if Selenskyj should not agree with a deal with Russia. The Ukrainian head of state left the White House in the dispute.

When Selenskyj arrived at Downing Street 10 on Saturday, he was cheered by numerous bypasses. Strong hugged him as a greeting and said: “You are very, very welcome here in Downing Street”. He added: “And as you heard outside on the street, you have the full support of the entire United Kingdom, and we are at your side, the side of Ukraine as long as it may take.”

Strander emphasized that both wanted to achieve “permanent peace for Ukraine, which is based on sovereignty and security for Ukraine – so important for Europe and so important for the United Kingdom”.

Selenskyj replied that he saw the hundreds of followers who had gathered before the downing street. “I would like to thank you, the United Kingdom citizens, for whom great support since the beginning of the war.”

He was “very happy” that he was King Charles III on Sunday. Selenskyj said. “We in Ukraine are very happy that we have such a strategic partner.” He added: “We count on their support.”

The meeting between Strander and Selenskyj behind closed doors took around 75 minutes. As a string of Selenskyj, they hugged again. On Sunday, Strait European heads of state and government welcomes a summit in London, in which Moscow is to advise on further European support for Ukraine in view of the US government.
