US President Donald Trump says he doesn’t want to meet Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin until he can be sure of an agreement in the Ukraine war.
When asked what Russia would have to do to get Trump to schedule a new meeting with Putin, the US president answered journalists on board the government plane Air Force One: “I will have to know that we will reach a deal. I will not waste my time.”
USA imposes new sanctions against Russia
A few days ago, the US President rejected an upcoming meeting with Putin that had previously been promised – and postponed it indefinitely. His administration also imposed new sanctions against Russia for the first time in Trump’s second term. As justification, she explicitly referred to Putin’s lack of will to end the war of aggression against Ukraine.
Most recently, the Western allies of the Ukraine tried to increase the pressure on Russia. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called on allies on Friday to supply longer-range weapons Ukraine on. This week, the EU also announced new sanctions against Russia’s energy sector in a bid to weaken the country’s war economy.
Trump is disappointed in Putin
Trump now reiterated that he was disappointed and that he had believed in peace in the region at a much earlier point in time than in the Middle East. Shortly thereafter, he moved on to another conflict: “Armenia and Azerbaijan – that was very difficult,” he said.
In fact, Putin told him on the phone: “Man, that was fantastic.” The US President repeatedly lists conflicts that he claims to have ended – even if peace researchers do not share this assessment.
