In Kiev, according to the head of the military administration, Timur Tkachenko, six people were killed and at least three others injured in the nightly Russian attacks. According to Tkachenko, the attacks hit, among other things, a residential building in the eastern district of Dniprovsky. Journalists from the AFP news agency heard violent explosions during the night and saw people rushing to emergency shelters. The Air Force issued a missile alert for the entire country on the Telegram online service. Ukraine’s Energy Ministry said there had been a “massive” attack on energy infrastructure.
At least three people were killed in Ukrainian attacks in Russia’s Rostov region, according to the local governor. The governor of the neighboring Krasnodar region also announced attacks, which he described as one of the “most massive.”
The Russian Defense Ministry said 249 Ukrainian drones were shot down overnight.
The latest attacks came amid diplomatic efforts to end the war in Ukraine. Delegations from the USA, Ukraine and several European countries, including Germany, held negotiations in Geneva on Sunday about a 28-point plan presented by the USA.
The original version of the plan required Ukraine to make painful concessions, such as ceding large areas in eastern Ukraine to Moscow, some of which were not conquered by Russia, limiting troop numbers and foregoing NATO membership. The original plan was largely in line with Moscow’s key demands.
Ukraine and its allies therefore pushed for a revision of the US plan in Geneva. After the talks in Switzerland, Kiev and its European partners spoke of progress, but they still see a lot of work ahead. Russia, for its part, rejected on Monday what Moscow said was a counter-proposal from the Europeans to the US plan for Ukraine as “not constructive.”
Meanwhile, the White House rejected allegations that US President Donald Trump was biased in favor of Russia. “The idea that the United States of America does not pay equal attention to both sides of this war to end it is a complete and total fallacy,” Trump spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt told reporters on Monday. Trump had previously been accused by members of his own Republican Party of favoring Russian positions in his efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
A virtual meeting of the so-called Coalition of the Willing, a Western support group for Ukraine, was planned for Tuesday. The group of around 30 countries also includes the USA. The virtual meeting should make it possible to take stock of the talks that took place in Geneva on Sunday, it was said from the Élysée Palace in Paris.
