UEFA prohibits Barcelona from selling visiting tickets in the Champions League due to racist behavior

NYON.- The UEFA he banned him on Friday Barcelona to sell tickets to its fans for the next Champions League away game after spectators unfurled a banner with Nazi connotations towards the team’s German coach.

A black flag with the phrase “Flick Heil,” in reference to coach Hansi Flick, was displayed in last week’s 2-1 loss to Monaco.

UEFA indicated that the club was accused of “racism and/or discriminatory conduct” and that the disciplinary actions will apply to Barcelona’s November 6 match against Red Star Belgrade.

The ban on ticket sales triggered a UEFA probationary sanction against Barcelona last season. In April, fans performed the Nazi salute in a match against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

Barcelona acknowledged that it received “repeated sanctions, both at the state and international level” for misconduct by fans at home and away games.

“The club will reinforce current measures and undertake additional actions that are appropriate to prevent these events from being repeated in the future, as well as to sanction those responsible,” the team said in a statement.

Fans who already purchased tickets for the game in Belgrade will receive a refund of the cost, the team said.

UEFA said its disciplinary judges fined 10,000 euros ($11,000) and ordered new evidentiary sanctions for repeated offenses next year. This will activate another veto on the sale of visiting tickets in European competitions.

Swiss cyclist dies after accident

Swiss cyclist Muriel Furrer died on Friday, a day after she suffered an accident in the road championship. He was 18 years old.

“Unfortunately Muriel Furrer passed away today at the University Hospital of Zurich,” the organizers confirmed in a statement.

Furrer suffered a skull injury in a crash Thursday in a wet road women’s youth road event and was airlifted to the hospital.

“With the death of Muriel Furrer, the international cycling community loses a cyclist who had a bright future ahead of her,” the International Cycling Union said in a statement.

Furrer is the second Swiss cyclist to die in a road competition in the last two seasons.

Gino Mäder suffered a fatal crash at the Tour de Suisse in June 2023. The 26-year-old cyclist went off the road and into a ravine on a descent. He died the next day due to his injuries.
