Shortly before the eagerly awaited speech at the convention by the Democratic US presidential candidate Kamala Harris, her Republican opponent Donald Trump railed against her immigration policy. In the contested state of Arizona, Trump gave a speech on Thursday (local time) near the wall on the border with Mexico that was built under his presidency. He referred to people in the USA who had been killed by illegal immigrants.
“When Kamala gives her convention speech tonight, she will not mention the victims,” Trump said. “She will not even mention their names.” At the same time, the former US President accused Harris of wanting to “open the borders” to illegal immigration.
From the Republicans’ point of view, immigration policy is a weak point in Harris’ record as deputy to US President Joe Biden. Trump also repeatedly makes the vice president the target of personal insults. For example, he described her laughter as “crazy”. Before his speech in Arizona, he repeated his accusation on Thursday on the US broadcaster Fox News that Harris would plunge the USA into “communism”.
The Democratic Party Convention began on Monday. At the end on Thursday evening (local time), Harris will formally accept her nomination as presidential candidate.
