The White House expressed this Friday its disagreement with the decision of the Norwegian Committee to award the Nobel Peace Prize to Machado instead of President Trump, who had been defending his merits for the prize for months through his work to end world conflicts.

On the other hand, the committee avoided polemicizing this Friday over Trump’s repeated calls and noted that, throughout its history, it usually sees “all types of campaigns and media attention” to which they remain oblivious.

This Friday, the committee recognized Machado with the award for his “tireless efforts” to promote rights and freedoms in Venezuela and favor a “just and peaceful” transition from “dictatorship to democracy.”

Recognition of Trump

Machado said Friday that his historic Nobel Peace Prize is not only a victory for his beleaguered nation, but also a tribute to President Donald Trump, whose policies have “restored democracy and freedom to the Americas.”

“I dedicated this award to the Venezuelan people and President Trump because I think that is absolutely fair,” Machado told the New York Post in an exclusive interview. “We, the Venezuelan people, are absolutely grateful to President Trump for the way he has supported democracy and freedom in the Americas.”

Machado led a grassroots opposition movement that defeated Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by a wide margin in the country’s 2024 elections, but the dictator illegitimately claimed that he won the election and now rules the country by force.
