The interview was conducted at the end of November after outgoing US President Joe Biden gave Ukraine the green light to use ATACMS missiles in mid-November. These have a range of 300 kilometers and can hit targets in Russia further behind the front. According to Russian information, the Ukrainian army has since used the missiles several times against targets in Russia.
Trump plans to abandon Washington’s current Ukraine policy and is an opponent of massive US aid to Ukraine. Since Russia’s attack in February 2022, the USA has been the country’s main supporter with billions of dollars and weapons.
During the election campaign, Trump announced that he would quickly end the war in Ukraine. He recently announced in another interview that US aid would be cut. “I want to reach an agreement, and the only way to reach an agreement is not to give up,” Trump said in the “Time” interview.
Critics fear that with Trump taking office on January 20th and the lack of US support, Ukraine will be forced to make a deal with Moscow and give up Russian-occupied territories.
