Trump nominates attorney Jamieson Greer to handle trade construction issues

US President-elect Donald Trump wants to make lawyer Jamieson Greer his trade representative. “Jamieson played a key role during my first term in imposing tariffs against China and other countries to combat unfair trade practices,” Trump said Tuesday. Greer served as chief of staff to then-Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer during the Republican’s first presidency from 2017 to 2021. Most recently he worked as a partner in a law firm.

Trump also announced that he would appoint his former economic advisor Kevin Hassett to head the National Economic Council.

In his first term as US President, Trump initiated a trade war with China and implemented extensive tariff increases. He now apparently wants to continue this policy. If Greer’s nomination is confirmed by the Senate, he will play a key role.

Trump announced on Monday (local time) that after returning to the White House he would impose higher tariffs on imports from China, but also from Mexico and Canada.

Tariffs are a central part of Trump’s economic agenda. US law allows the president to impose tariffs on US imports by decree. During the election campaign, the Republican announced far-reaching tariffs for allies and opponents alike.

Last week, Trump nominated entrepreneur and China critic Howard Lutnick for the post of Commerce Secretary. The future president announced that he would be given “direct responsibility for the Office of the Trade Representative.”
