After talks between the outside ministers of the United States and Russia and other senior representatives, Trump commented in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday – the first such format since the beginning of the Russian war of aggression. Washington and Moscow agreed in Riyadh negotiations to settle their differences and to quickly end the Ukraine War. In addition to the Europeans, Ukraine was not invited, which Selenskyj criticized.
“I am very disappointed,” said Trump in his estate Mar-A-Lago in Florida. He heard that Kiev was outraged by having gotten “no place” at the conversation table, Trump said when asked about the Ukrainian reaction. “Today I heard: ‘Oh, we were not invited.’ Well, you have been there for three years (…) You should never have started doing it.
Trump also promised an early meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He will “probably” meet with the Kremlin boss before the end of the month. After the talks in Riad, he was “very confident,” said the right -wing populist.
“Russia wants to do something. They want to stop the wild barbarism,” he said. Regarding the prospects for a possible end of the war under his presidency, he said: “I think I have the power to end this war and I think it is going very well.”
Trump also “fully” advocated that European troops should secure a possible peace in Ukraine. The United States is not in demand because they are “very far away”.
Meanwhile, Selenskyj accused Trump’s government of freed Putin from isolation through her approach across Europeans and Ukrainians. “I think the USA helped Putin break out of isolation for years,” said Selenskyj on Wednesday. “All of this has no positive effects on Ukraine.”
Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) also criticized the procedure of the US government. “The Americans made a mistake to take the NATO membership of Ukraine off the table,” he told Deutschlandfunk. US expressions for Ukrainian regional detections would also weaken the western negotiating position from the outset.
In addition, it is not the case that the United States negotiates with Russia without involving European countries, but at the same time wanted to put on the burden of later peacekeeping alone, Pistorius said.
Meanwhile, praising words for Trump came from Moscow. Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrow welcomed that Trump attributed the Ukraine War to an earlier US support for Ukraine’s NATO accession. Trump was the first and the only western leadership politician to date to publicly said that “one of the basic causes of the Ukraine situation was the penetrating course of the former (US) government to convert Ukraine into NATO,” said Lavrov in the Russian Parliament.
The diplomatic approach between the United States and Russia ensures fears in Ukraine that it can be marginalized in the negotiations on the future of its own country. The Europeans also defend themselves against being ignored.
