Trump government wants to shorten visas for foreign students and journalists

President Donald Trump’s US government wants to significantly limit the permitted length of stay for foreign students and journalists in the USA. According to the plans, Visa for students should be exhibited for a maximum of four years in the future, as can be seen from a publication in the US-Athlete on Thursday. Foreign journalists should therefore have to renew their visa every eight months.

A journalist visa would only be valid for 240 days before it would have to be renewed. Only 90-day visas are to be exhibited for Chinese journalists. So far, US visa have usually been valid for the entire duration of a posting of foreign correspondents or the duration of a degree, but at most for ten years. If you stay longer, you have to apply for a permanent residence permit.

In the recent proposals, the U.S. Ministry of Homeland protective said that a non-mentioned number of foreign citizens use the system to remain permanently in the United States as “eternal students”. “Former governments” would have allowed foreign students and other visa owners to remain almost unlimited in the United States, which entails security risks, caused immeasurable costs for taxpayers and disadvantaged US citizens, “it continues.

The ministry did not provide any information about the disadvantages that the US taxpayers are created by students from abroad. These usually pay the full tuition fees and are therefore an important source of income for the universities. In the academic year 2023/24, around 1.1 million people studied from abroad in the United States, more than in any other country in the world.

The suggestions met with sharp criticism at universities. The US government “sends a message to talented people all over the world that their contributions are not valued in the United States,” said Miriam Feldblum, chairwoman of the association of the university and college presidents. Such a regulation is given a disadvantage of US research internationally because fewer top forces come into the country.

According to its own statements, the US government had already withdrawn around 6,000 student visa in recent months. Most of those affected came from China or had demonstrated at their universities against Israel’s approach in the Gaza Strip. Trump had also put together billions of dollars in state funding for universities. The congress also increased taxes for private universities.

In the case of China, Trump made a U -turn on Monday. He praised his relationships with Chinese head of state Xi Jinping and announced that he wanted to double the number of Chinese students in the United States to 600,000.

The US President had already sought to shorten the Visa for journalists’ validity period during his first term. His successor Joe Biden had rejected the plans after the change of office.
