WASHINGTON —President-Elect Donald trump This Monday he expressed his support for the president of the House of Representatives, Michael Johnsonbefore foreseeably being elected again to occupy the position and thus ending any hint of dispute within the Republican Party that could delay his agenda policy.
“The American people need immediate relief from all the destructive policies of the last administration. President Mike Johnson is a good, hard-working, religious man,” Trump said of him on his Truth Social platform.
“He will do the right thing and we will continue winning,” Trump said a few days before the vote to elect the new president is held in the House of Representatives and amid criticism from the most conservative wing of the Republicans.
This sector of the Republican Party, which will have a narrow majority in the chamber, has not taken well to Johnson supporting a temporary spending agreement that did not include Trump’s demands to raise the debt ceiling.
The anger is such that Representative James Comer, chairman of the House Oversight Committee, urged Trump to take action on the matter so that the dispute did not escalate and the vote on January 3 could be at risk.
“We have five Republicans who will not commit to voting for Mike Johnson, and he can only lose one or two votes,” Comer said in an interview with Fox News, in which he announced that he would “strongly encourage” Trump to mediate.
But Trump’s public support for Johnson could help Johnson’s election.
