Washington.- The president of the United States, donald trumpannounced on Thursday a plan aimed at making the in vitro fertilization (IVF)the first step of a long-announced campaign promise.
Earlier this year, Trump called himself the “fertility president” and promised to address accessibility to IVF treatments.
Substantive coverage of fertility-related procedures and medications in the United States remains sparse and highly variable depending on specific patients, providers, employers, and state regulations.
It’s unclear what specific changes the initiative will lead to, but he said in the Oval Office that “prices were going to go down. Go down a lot.”
Trump added that the White House is proposing a benefits option for employers that he said would encourage them to offer workers coverage for IVF through a supplemental plan.
It would work similarly to dental and vision health plan services in the United States, which are separate from primary health insurance and billed as a separate type of care.
Patients must usually go through several rounds of IVF treatments to reach a viable pregnancy, and each treatment can cost tens of thousands of dollars.
The Trump administration’s announcement included a proposal to make some of those drugs available for patients to purchase directly from manufacturers at discounted prices, through the president’s new TrumpRx website, starting in early 2026.
