In the United States, the tariffs announced by President Trump came into force on certain auto parts on Saturday. A surcharge of 25 percent applies. There are relief for manufacturers who ending their vehicles in the USA. You can have part of the tariffs reimbursed.
In addition, the additional tariffs on aluminum and steel should not be due for auto parts. This should avoid a double burden. US President Donald Trump announced these exceptions a few days ago. He reacted with the step to complaints in the industry.
At the time, Trump himself said that it was just a “little help” during a “short transition phase”. The reliefs were very limited, he pushed. “Basically, they pay 25 percent,” he emphasized with a view to the car manufacturers. Trump had already announced tariffs from 25 percent on imported cars and components weeks ago. The delivery for finished cars came into force at the beginning of April, which for parts now follows.
Many cars are installed outside the USA
There were warnings of drastic negative consequences and price increases from industry. According to estimates of market researchers, around half of the vehicles sold in the USA are assembled outside the country. Even US manufacturers produce many cars abroad, for example in Mexico.
The German Association of the Automobile Industry (VDA) positively evaluated the exceptions to the previous multiple calculation of tariffs. “Nevertheless, the additional burden remains enormous,” said VDA President Hildegard Müller a few days ago. German manufacturers who deliver from Europe to the USA would still have to pay a total of 27.5 percent tariffs on cars. The attempt at a political agreement on the abolition of the additional tariffs remains decisive.
According to the new announcements of the White House, there was confusion about the provisions for auto parts from Canada and Mexico, which are established according to the rules of the USMCA trade agreement. So far exceptions have been applied. According to the customs authority, these auto parts are excluded from the 25 percent tariffs under certain conditions.
