An adult who tested positive for measles and who was not vaccinated died in New Mexico, which is the second death in the middle of an outbreak of this virus that extends by the United States, the State Health Department (NMDOH) reported Thursday.
According to the authorities, the official cause of his death is still being investigated, but the presence of the virus in his body has been confirmed.
The deceased person, who lived in Lea County, did not look for medical attention before his death, the department noted in a statement.
This case raises the total number of cases of measles in the state to 10 – seis adults and four children, all children under 17 -, of which seven were in non -vaccinated people and the rest in individuals with unknown vaccination history.
Measles, one of the most contagious diseases in the worldit is extending in the United States and there are already more than 200 cases reported in nine states. The majority of infections have occurred in non -vaccinated people or whose vaccination status is unknown.
Until now, the CDC Control and Prevention Centers (CDC) have been reported to Alaska, California, Georgia, Kentucky, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Rhode Island and Texas.
Most infections are associated with three outbreaks. The most serious is one that began west of Texas, where a school age died and not vaccinated because of the virus.
The measles outbreak occurs in the midst of a resurgence of the movement against vaccines in state policy, with more than 20 bills currently in consideration to lighten regulations on them.
The New Mexico Department of Health said that the only way to avoid measles is vaccination, and urged residents to vaccinate to protect themselves and their families.
