The United States team secured its qualification for the round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup after beating Australia 2-0 this Friday in Seattle. The team led by Mauricio Pochettino added its second consecutive victory in the group stage and remains on a perfect path in Group D.
The American team quickly took the lead thanks to an own goal by Australian defender Cameron Burgess in the 11th minute. The hosts’ offensive pressure continued to pay off and, before half-time, Alex Freeman increased the difference with a header that made it 2-0.
The United States faced the match without its main offensive figure, Christian Pulisic. The AC Milan attacker was left out of the squad due to the calf injury that had already prevented him from playing in the opening match of the tournament. In his place, Ricardo Pepi occupied the starting forward position.
Australia improved in the second half, especially after Nestory Irankunda came off the bench. The Socceroos generated greater danger and forced the Americans to reinforce their defensive work, but they did not find the formula to score a goal.
With this result, the United States mathematically guarantees its presence in the next round. Thanks to their victories over Paraguay and Australia, the Americans cannot finish lower than second place in Group D, since they have an advantage in the tiebreaker criteria against both rivals.
In addition to securing a ticket to the round of 32, the American team was in a privileged position to remain at the top of the group with one day left to conclude the initial phase of the championship.
Pochettino’s team has shown solidity at both ends of the field during its first matches and is emerging as one of the candidates to put in an outstanding performance in the tournament it organizes together with Mexico and Canada.
