The US Supreme Court is expected to announce its decision on Monday on former President Donald Trump’s request to grant him “absolute presidential immunity” from criminal prosecution. Trump is claiming immunity in a federal criminal case in Washington, among other things, over his attempts to cling to power after his 2020 election defeat.
The special investigator in charge of the case, Jack Smith, who filed charges against Trump last August, rejects the former head of state’s request. Even according to a lower court ruling, a former president does not enjoy “absolute immunity” from prosecution after his term in office. The decision of the predominantly conservative Supreme Court could have an impact on some of the criminal charges brought against Trump. The 78-year-old wants to run again against incumbent Joe Biden in the US presidential election in November.
