Steve Bannon: Former Trump advisor begins prison sentence

He tried to postpone his sentence until the very end – without success: Former Trump advisor Steve Bannon will now be in prison for four months.

According to consistent media reports, former US President Donald Trump’s former chief strategist, Steve Bannon, has begun his four-month prison sentence. The 70-year-old appeared in the prison designated for him in the US federal state of Connecticut on Monday, as reported by the US broadcaster ABC News, among others. Bannon was convicted of contempt of Congress.

Most recently, he had tried to have his detention postponed at the US Supreme Court. However, the Supreme Court rejected the request.

Steve Bannon: Proud to go to prison

The ultra-right publicist and conspiracy theorist Bannon was convicted about two years ago for ignoring a subpoena from the investigative committee on the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021, and for failing to provide requested documents. Bannon describes the allegations against him as politically motivated.

According to ABC News, Bannon said before going to prison that he was proud to go to prison. “If that’s what it takes to stand up to tyranny (…), then I’m proud to do it,” he said.

Storming of the Capitol on January 6

Trump’s supporters stormed the parliament building on January 6, 2021. Congress formally confirmed Democrat Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential election. Trump incited his supporters in a speech, saying he had been robbed of his election victory by massive fraud. To this day, the Republican, who wants to return to the White House after the election in November, does not acknowledge his defeat.

A committee of the US House of Representatives investigated the storming of the Capitol and called on Trump confidants such as Bannon to cooperate, but they refused.
