Steinmeier and Scholz travel to Pope’s burial according to Rome – Merz not included






Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and the outgoing Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) will travel to Rome for the burial of Pope Francis. Steinmeier will lead the official German delegation, a spokeswoman for the President said on Tuesday. In addition to Steinmeier and Scholz, Bundestag President Julia Klöckner (CDU), Federal Council President Anke Rehlinger (SPD) and the President of the Federal Constitutional Court, Stephan Harbarth, travel to Rome. The likely future Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) will not travel to the funeral.

The burial ceremony for the Pontifex is scheduled to take place on Saturday from 10 a.m. on St. Peter’s Square in Rome, as the Vatican announced on Tuesday. The head of the almost 1.4 billion Catholics died on Monday at the age of 88. As the cause of death, the Vatican stated the consequences of a stroke.

Steinmeier had honored Francis on Monday as a “important Pope”. “We can all be grateful for Francis and his beneficial work,” wrote the Federal President in a condolence letter. Steinmeier thanked the deceased for his commitment, especially for disadvantaged, poor, marginalized, displaced persons and refugees.

Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser (SPD) ordered Merrybalance on Tuesday to the death of Francis. Due to the arrangement, the flags were placed on half mast on Tuesday. Mourning was also ordered in federal states.
