Russian President Vladimir Putin met the US specialist Steve Witkoff, according to Russian state media in Moscow. Putin received the US diplomat, the news agency TASS reported on Wednesday, citing the Kremlin. Witkoff’s visit takes place shortly before the end of an ultimatum that US President Donald Trump had set Russia to end the Ukraine conflict. The deadline should run out on Friday.
Trump had threatened with further sanctions against Russia, should it not stop his offensive in Ukraine. We were talking about so -called secondary sanctions against Russian trading partners such as China and India.
Trump said on Tuesday that he wanted to wait for Witkoff’s talks in Moscow before giving punitive measures on the way. “We’ll see what happens,” he said to journalists.
Russia has so far been unimpressed by the threats. Negotiations on an ceasefire in Ukraine have so far been in vain.
