South Korea defeats Australia and qualifies for the quarterfinals of the World Baseball Classic

South Korea got his ticket to the quarterfinals of the World Baseball Classic 2026 after beating 7-2 Australia this Monday at the Tokyo Dome, in a match that ended up being more decisive than the scoreboard indicated.

The Asian team not only needed to win, but do so by a sufficient margin to prevail in the Group C tiebreaker system, which ended with a three-way tie between Korea, Australia and Chinese Taipei. Finally, the run quotient criterion favored the Koreans, who advanced as second in the group behind Japan.

The key play came in the ninth inning when Hyun Min Ahn hit a sacrifice fly that scored Korea’s seventh run, a score that ended up being decisive in securing qualification.

Moon led the Korean attack

The great offensive protagonist was Bo Gyeong Moon, who hit a two-run home run in the second inning and finished the day with four RBIs, also consolidating himself as the tournament leader in that department.

Moon opened the scoring with a 130-meter homer off Australian starter Lachlan Wells, giving Korea an early lead.

The Korean offense continued to produce in the third inning. Jahmai Jones and Jung Hoo Lee started the inning with back-to-back doubles, and Moon later hit another double that drove in Lee to extend the lead.

In the fifth inning, Moon himself produced again with an RBI single, while Do Yeong Kim added another run with a hit to the opposite side with two outs.

Australia tried to react

Australia managed to pull one back thanks to a solo home run by Robbie Glendinning at the start of the fifth inning.

Later, in the eighth, Travis Bazzana hit an RBI single that brought the Australians closer, reducing the lead to 6-2 and putting some pressure on the Korean bullpen.

However, Korea responded with efficient defense. The team made three key double plays that stopped Australia’s offensive threats, which ended up leaving several runners on base.

In total, seven Korean bowlers combined to limit Australia, who failed to capitalize on their offensive opportunities.

A victory with suspense until the end

The outcome of the match maintained tension until the last inning. An error by Australian shortstop Jarryd Dale allowed Korea to put runners on first and third with one out in the ninth.

Taking advantage of the situation, Hyun Min Ahn hit the sacrifice fly that drove in the seventh run, ensuring the necessary margin to overcome his rivals in the tiebreaker.

With this result, South Korea finished with a 2-2 record in the group stage and advanced as runner-up in Group C.

Next challenge in Miami

Korea will now travel to Miami, where they will face the winner of Group D next Friday at 6:30 pm ET, seeking a spot in the tournament’s semifinals.

Rotation injury concern

Despite the victory, Korea suffered a setback when left-handed starter Ju Young Son left the game during warmups before starting the third inning due to an apparent injury.

Right-hander Kyung-Eun Noh took his place on the mound and responded with two scoreless innings, helping to maintain control of the game.

With an offense led by Moon and a bullpen that knew how to contain Australia, South Korea keeps its path alive in the World Baseball Classic 2026.
