In the course of the explorations for a new coalition, top representatives of the Union and SPD have exchanged ideas with the outgoing Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD). The CDU chairman Friedrich Merz and CSU state group leader Alexander Dobrindt came to the Chancellery for an hour and a half. The SPD-Co bosses Lars Klingbeil and Saskia Esken also took part in the joint conversation.
The exchange with Scholz was supposed to serve the security situation in Europe with a view to the EU special summit this Thursday in Brussels, as government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit announced.
On the evening before, the CDU, CSU and SPD had agreed on a package for massive investments in defense and infrastructure in their explorations. To this end, debt rules are to be loosened with the old Bundestag.
