Sinner completes the “Sun Double” with a second title in Miami

MIAMI.- The Italian Jannik Sinner He defeated the Czech this Sunday Jiri Lehecka and won his second Miami Masters 1000with which he also completed the double of titles known as “Sunshine Double”.

Sinner is the first tennis player to win consecutive trophies Indian Wells and Miami from Roger Federer in 2017, but he is the only one to achieve it without giving up a set throughout the two Masters 1000 Americans.

The world number two finished off his impeccable month of March by beating Lehecka (22nd) this Sunday by a double 6-4 in a final delayed due to weather problems.

A winner in a rainy Miami, Sinner is the eighth male tennis player to crown the “Sun Double”, a feat that he also signed on Saturday Aryna Sabalenka in the female branch.

Before Sinner, the Swiss Federer (2005, 2006 and 2017), the Serbian Novak Djokovic (2011, 2014, 2015 and 2016), the Chilean Marcelo Rios (1998) and the Americans Andrew Agassi (2001), Pete Sampras (1994), Michael Chang (1992) and Jim Courier (1991).

“It’s something I never would have thought I would win, because it’s hard to do,” Sinner congratulated himself. “To come here and perform at a very high level again after Indian Wells means a lot.”

The Italian thus placed himself only 1,190 points behind the leader of the ATP, Carlos Alcarazat the gates of the clay court season.

“Carlos has been so consistent for so long. And on clay we all know how strong he is,” Sinner said of the Spaniard.

“But I worry about myself. Now the most important thing is to recover and enjoy the moment because I don’t have much time to adapt to clay if I want to play on Monaco“said Sinner about the next Masters 1000 tournament, which starts on April 5 in Monte Carlo.

Record streak

After two lost finals in 2021 and 2023, Sinner won his first Miami title in 2024. Since that edition he has won 12 games in a row, since in 2025 he did not defend the crown as he was suspended for his double positive for clostebol.

With the absence of Djokovic and the early fall of Alcaraz this year, the doors were wide open for him to reach the 26th title of his career and seventh at the Masters 1000 level.

In that category, only inferior to the Grand Slams, Sinner has a record streak of 17 consecutive victories without giving up a set, with which he triumphed in November in Paris and this month in the two major stops of the American hard court tour.

His last victim was Lehecka, debutant in a Masters 1000 final after two formidable weeks in which he did not give up his serve once.

“I am very happy and very sad at the same time to be here, next time I hope to lift the trophy,” said the Czech on stage.

Infallible service

Lehecka, 24, fought from start to finish to emulate his compatriot Jakub Mensikwho surprised Djokovic in the 2025 Miami final.

Like a year ago, the rain was the protagonist by postponing the start of the match for an hour and a half and interrupting it after the Italian won the first set.

The delay did not derail Sinner, who only needed two games to end Lehecka’s unbeaten serve.

The former world number one then cemented the victory with his exceptional serve, whose recent improvement has been fundamental to his current winning streak.

Leader in games won on service (94%) and points obtained with the first serve (81%) this year, Sinner scored 10 aces this Sunday and easily solved the only three break balls he conceded, all in the fourth game of the match.
