Several people were shot in a shooting that occurred this Wednesday shortly before 2:30 pm, just two blocks north of the White House, at the intersection of 17th Street and I Street NW, next to Farragut Square Park, as reported by News4 citing police sources.
According to the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), the scene has already been secured and a suspect is in custody, an announcement that was made public on social media shortly before 3 p.m. Government spokesperson Karoline Leavitt noted for her part that “the White House has been informed of this tragic situation and President Trump remains aware.”
Strong emergency deployment
What is known is that at least three people were hit by gunfire. Two members of the National Guard were injured. The identities of those affected have not yet been revealed.
Dozens of police vehicles and emergency teams were deployed to the scene, cordoning off several streets around the area of the incident, near a hotel located northwest of the White House. Witnesses had reported that one of the victims was taken into an ambulance with his face covered in blood.
Trump and JD Vance away from the area
Although the attack occurred in the vicinity of the White House, both President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance are outside the District of Columbia. Trump is at his residence in Mar-a-Lago, Florida. Vance was at Fort Campbell, an Army base between Tennessee and Kentucky.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the attack.
