Serena Williams returns to the Wimbledon singles draw and captures all eyes

The legendary Serena Williams will return to play an official singles match at Wimbledon after almost four years of absence, in what represents one of the most anticipated returns in world tennis. The 44-year-old American accepted a special invitation to compete in both singles and doubles alongside her sister Venus Williams.

After reappearing this month in two doubles tournaments, Serena decided to take another step in her return to the circuit and try her luck directly on the stage where she won seven individual titles. Analysts and former players consider that, although she arrives without a competitive rhythm in singles, her experience and ability to compete on big stages make her a dangerous rival for anyone.

The tournament draw will define its first opponent this Friday, and because it does not have a ranking nor will it be seeded, it could face one of the main favorites from the beginning.

The candidates for the title

Although Serena’s return is the focus of media attention, the top contenders for the championship are Aryna Sabalenka, 2022 champion Elena Rybakina, young sensation Mirra Andreeva and current champion Iga witek.

Andreeva arrives with great confidence after recently conquering Roland Garros, while Rybakina remains one of the most dangerous players on grass thanks to her powerful serve.

Sinner and Djokovic lead the men’s fight

In the men’s draw, the big favorite is Jannik Sinner, current Wimbledon champion, especially after the absence of Carlos Alcaraz due to a right wrist injury.

The main challenge for Sinner could come from the hand of Novak Djokovic, winner of seven titles at Wimbledon and owner of an impressive record on the London grass. At 39 years old, the Serbian is still considered one of the strongest candidates to win another Grand Slam.

The possibility that Serena Williams and Djokovic will once again lift the Wimbledon trophies, as happened in 2015, adds a historical and nostalgic component to an edition that promises emotions from day one.
