Scotland withdraws its support for Infantino and will not vote for his re-election in 2027

The Scottish Football Association withdrew its support for Gianni Infantino and confirmed that it will not vote in favor of his re-election as FIFA president in 2027, thus adding to the growing opposition within European football.

The president of the Scottish federation, Ian Maxwell, assured that his body is aligned with the position of UEFA, which has expressed a loss of confidence in FIFA and has questioned Infantino’s management.

“The Scottish FA’s position has been very clear since the UEFA federations met. We are aligned with UEFA’s position,” Maxwell said during the presentation of new Scotland coach Sebastian Pocognoli.

“We will not vote in favor of Infantino’s re-election in 2027,” he stated.

Scotland’s decision comes after criticism over Infantino’s attempt to bring private investment into FIFA competitions, including the World Cup. The project, which ultimately did not go ahead, caused strong rejection among different federations and international organizations.

Scotland joins England, Wales and the Republic of Ireland, who have also withdrawn their support for the current FIFA president in recent weeks.

In addition, UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and the Confederation of North, Central America and the Caribbean (CONCACAF) have publicly questioned Infantino and demanded his resignation over the frustrated private investment project in FIFA competitions.

Despite growing opposition, no candidate has yet officially announced their intention to compete against Infantino for the FIFA presidency. The deadline to present candidates will end on November 18, while the elections are scheduled for 2027.
