Dominican Sandy Alcántara once again showed why he is considered one of the great arms in Marlins history. The right-hander set the franchise record for most career innings pitched this Saturday, during Miami’s 7-0 victory over the Angels at loanDepot Park.
Alcántara came into the game with 1,223.2 innings and needed just seven outs to surpass Ricky Nolasco, who held the organization’s all-time record. The Dominican retired the first six batters he faced and tied the record with a strikeout of Venezuelan Moisés Ballesteros to close the second inning.
The new record was officially in Alcántara’s hands when he struck out Josh Lowe in the third inning.
The Marlins ace ended up working seven scoreless innings, allowing just three hits, walking one and striking out eight batters, tying his best record of the season. In addition, he extended his streak without allowing runs to 20 innings.
The innings record is the third franchise record Alcantara has set this season. In June he became Miami’s all-time leader in strikeouts and in July he did the same in quality starts.
Since his debut with the Marlins, on June 29, 2018, Alcántara has accumulated 1,223.2 innings, the seventh most in the Major Leagues during that period, despite having missed the entire 2024 season due to Tommy John surgery.
After a difficult 2025 in his return from surgery, the Dominican has recovered in 2026 the level that made him one of the most dominant pitchers in the Majors. Before his departure on Saturday, he led MLB with 156.2 innings and 17 quality starts in 24 appearances.
His excellent form also allowed him to be recently chosen as National League Player of the Week, after throwing 13 scoreless innings in two quality starts against the Phillies and the Mets. It is only the second time that he has received that recognition, after the one obtained in May 2022, during the campaign in which he won the Cy Young award.
The Marlins also did their part to celebrate the feat. Miami took the lead in the third inning with two-run hits from Xavier Edwards and Otto López, and added three more runs in the fifth inning.
With the win, the Marlins snapped a four-game losing streak and moved their record to 59-59.
For Alcántara, in addition, the victory confirmed another impressive statistic: he is now 28-1 lifetime when receiving a lead of at least four runs.
