Salah would be an “asset” for MLS club San Diego, says owner

ATLANTA.- The owner of the San Diego FCthe Egyptian-British billionaire Mohamed Mansourconsidered this Thursday that Mohamed Salah He would be a great “asset” for the club MLSat a time when speculation is growing about the next fate of the star of the Liverpool.

This same week, the Egyptian football icon announced his departure from Anfield at the end of the season, after a brilliant cycle of nine years and 255 goals that established him as one of the Reds’ greatest legends.

Although Saudi Arabia is emerging as the most likely destination, Salah could choose to follow in the footsteps of stars like Lionel Messi, Son Heung-min and Antoine Griezmann towards the thriving North American league (MLS).

In this scenario, San Diego FC is one of the clubs that could be most interested, also taking into account the Egyptian origin of its owner.

“He is probably one of the great players today. And for any team that has him, or any country that has him, he will certainly be an asset,” Mansour told AFP this Thursday on the sidelines of the Business of Soccer forum in Atlanta.

Mansour, however, avoided confirming whether he is actively trying to recruit Salah or whether he has previously tested a possible move for the attacker.

“Of course, Mo Salah is someone who, as an Egyptian, because of my origin, I am very proud of. He is someone who reached the world stage as one of the great players,” he recalled. “And I think… wherever he goes, he will contribute a lot to that league, to that country and to that team, without a doubt.”

Salah, 33, won two titles in the Premier League with Liverpool along with a European Champions League and other trophies, in addition to four Golden Boots of the English league.

The Egyptian was a figure of the technical revolution Jurgen Klopp at Anfield, propelling the team back to the top of English and European football.

At a panel in Atlanta, Mansour recalled that everything Egypt He freezes every time Salah plays and considered him his favorite footballer of all time.

Salah has endured a difficult time at Liverpool this season, scoring just five goals and in December he declared that the club had “thrown him under the bus” after a drastic drop in form saw him relegated to the bench.

“Chance”

Despite all his praise for his compatriot, Mansour insisted that transfer decisions at San Diego FC are in the hands of the sporting director and coach.

“I let the responsible people” decide, he told AFP. “I just say, ‘I have this opportunity. This is what I believe. You make the decision. Then you tell me.'”

“If they say: ‘No, it doesn’t fit,’ whoever it is, in whatever sector it is, that’s where it all ends,” he said.

That philosophy has borne fruit so far in the Californian franchise, which in 2025 experienced a historic debut season in the MLS, breaking the points record for an expansion team.

One of the youngest squads in MLS, San Diego FC draws from the global network of “Right to Dream” academies led by Mansour, which has operations in Ghana, Egypt and Denmark.

Mohammed Kudusend of Tottenham and the Ghana national team, is among the network’s alumni.

“What I like about our style of play is that it’s a team effort, it’s resilience, it’s energy, it’s a winning spirit,” Mansour said. “Soccer, football, is a team sport, it is not just one person’s.”
