Russia covers Ukraine at the weekend with drone attack waves

After stopping the US military aid and the transfer of US intelligence data to Ukraine, Russia continued to cover the neighboring country with nightly attack waves at the weekend. The Russian army fired a total of 119 drones against the country on Sunday night, the Ukrainian army said on Sunday. The night before, at least 14 people were killed in Ukraine in Russian attacks. President Wolodymyr Selenskyj then called for harder sanctions against Russia.

The Ukrainian Air Force explained on Sunday in six regions in six regions. 71 drones were intercepted over a dozen regions of the country and over the capital Kiev, 37 more would have caused no damage. At first, no information was given about fatalities or injuries.

On Saturday evening, Russia bombed several residential buildings with lubricating bombs in the Donezzk region in the Donzkka region near the front. According to the prosecutor, twelve people were injured.

According to rescue workers, eleven people were killed in the night on Saturday, which was particularly directed against the center of the city of Dobropillja in Donetsk in the eastern Ukrainian Donetsk, eleven people were killed on Friday evening. In Dobropillja, which is not far from the front, AFP reporters saw charred residential buildings, destroyed market stalls and clues on screeching bombs.

According to three other people, Governor Oleh Synehubow were killed in the small town of Bohoduchiw in the East Ukrainian region of Charkiw. Seven people were therefore injured. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia fired a total of two rockets and 145 drones on Bohoduchiw on Saturday night.

Selenskyj described the attacks on Saturday as evidence that Russia’s goals were “unchanged”. It is therefore “very important to continue to do everything to protect life, strengthen our air defense and to tighten the sanctions against Russia”. He added that Russia had attacked the small town of Bohoduchiw and arrived as rescue workers, they too had been “intentionally” attacked. This is a “miserable and inhumane” tactic, which is often used by the Russian side.

US President Donald Trump, who most recently assigned the fault of Ukraine and Selenskyj for a lack of peace solution, had initially threatened new sanctions and tariffs on Friday in view of the massive attacks on Ukraine. A little later, however, he turned against Ukraine again by saying that it was “easier” for him to negotiate with Russia than with Ukraine – and he reaffirmed that he believed the Russian President Vladimir Putin.

After his unprecedented dispute with Selenskyj in front of running cameras in the White House, Trump temporarily suspended US military aids for Ukraine at the beginning of last week. CIA boss John Ratcliffe later explained that the transmission of intelligence information “pause”.

Washington also stopped access by Ukraine to satellite images bought from the US government. Access was “temporarily interrupted,” said a spokesman for the National Authority for Geographic Enlightenment from the United States.

Maxar, one of the companies that had sent pictures to Kiev on behalf of Washington, confirmed the interruption. The US satellite images are of crucial importance for Ukraine in defense against Russia.

For his part, the Russian Ministry of Defense said that it destroyed 31 Ukrainian drones on Saturday night. Most of them were intercepted in the airspace above the Krasnodar region located on the Black Sea and near the Crimean Peninsula.

On Sunday, the Ministry also reported two other Ukrainian locations. In the eastern region of Donetsk, the place Kostjantynopil was taken around 50 kilometers west of the city of Donetsk controlled by Russia. In addition, the village of Nowenke was conquered in the northeastern region of Sumy. It is close to the border with the Russian region of Kursk.

Reports were also confirmed with the information from Moscow, according to which the Russian army started an important offensive in the Sumy region for the first time since 2022. Ukraine had contested any major push of the Russian armed forces on Saturday.

The Moscow Ministry of Defense continued that the village of Lebedewka has recaptured in the Kursk region. Ukraine started an offensive in the Russian region of Kursk last August. In the meantime, however, Russia has recaptured more than two thirds of the area taken by Ukraine.
