Russia officially certified the recognition of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistanunder control of Talibanafter receiving the credential letters from the new ambassador, Gul Hasan, thus being the first country to do so since the fundamentalists returned to power in 2021.

“We believe that the act of official recognition of the Government of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan will promote the development of a fruitful bilateral cooperation among our countries in various fields,” said the Russian Foreign Ministry.

The text affects Russia to perceive with the new Afghan authorities “important economic and commercial perspectives, as well as in projects in energy, agriculture, transport and infrastructure.

“We will continue to support Kabul to strengthen regional security and the fight against threats of terrorism and drug trafficking,” says Moscow. “We will continue to support Kabul to strengthen regional security and the fight against threats of terrorism and drug trafficking,” says Moscow.

Until the arrival of the ambassador, the Afghanistan of the Taliban-since 2003 included in the Russian terrorist list-was represented by a business manager, although in April it was decided to offer the Afghan legation the greatest diplomatic status after leaving this list for a ruling of the Supreme Court.

With a view to normalizing the relationship with the new Kabul authorities, Russia approved a law with which a court can again allow the activities of a group considered terrorist if it shows that it has ceased its criminal activities.

Since the end of 2024, Moscow has publicly advocated to try to normalize the relationship with the new Kabul authorities based on an alleged pragmatism that would serve to combine efforts in the fight against drug trafficking and terrorism.
