Democratic US presidential candidate Kamala Harris received prominent support at a campaign rally in the battleground state of Georgia. Rock legend Bruce Springsteen warned at the event on Thursday (local time) in Atlanta that Republican candidate Donald Trump wanted to be an “American tyrant.” Former President Barack Obama, meanwhile, questioned Trump’s economic qualifications and made fun of his “word salad” speeches. Harris is reportedly set to receive more celebrity campaign endorsements on Friday.
Springsteen said in Atlanta that Harris was running “to become the 47th president of the United States.” Donald Trump is running “to become an American tyrant.” The ex-president “does not understand this country, its history or what it means to be deeply American, and that’s why on November 5th I’m voting for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz,” the singer added, mentioning the Democratic running mate . He performed three songs for the crowd that had gathered for a performance by Harris.
Springsteen continued that he was at the rally to “oppose” Trump and his running mate JD Vance. He wants someone in office “who honors the Constitution, who does not threaten our great democracy, but wants to protect and guide it.” There is only one candidate in this year’s election who upholds these fundamentals, he continued: “Kamala Harris.”
The rock singer’s songs are often about the struggle of the working class; over the years, Springsteen has become a quasi-composer for the Democratic Party. He is one of the most popular artists in the USA and has also campaigned for Democrats John Kerry, Obama, Hillary Clinton and President Joe Biden.
Obama, the only black president in US history, remains very popular among Democratic Party supporters. “We don’t need four years of a would-be king, a would-be dictator running around trying to punish his enemies,” Obama said. In addition to Obama and Springsteen, Hollywood actor Samuel L. Jackson and director Spike Lee also appeared in Atlanta.
At the event, Harris emphasized her roots in the US middle class in contrast to billionaire Trump and promised to make the fight against inflation a priority of her term in office.
Trump and Harris are running against each other in the presidential election on November 5th. Trump wants to return to the White House after his first term in office (2017-2021) and his election defeat in 2020.
The incumbent Vice President Harris took over the candidacy of the Democratic Party after incumbent Biden resigned at the end of July. She would be the first woman to head the world’s largest economic and military power. The polls predict an extremely close outcome of the election.
US media reported on Thursday that superstar Beyoncé would perform with Harris on Friday in her home state of Texas. Harris uses Beyoncé’s song “Freedom” as her signature tune during the election campaign.
