Protest against the US Department Center: Mayor of Newark briefly arrested

Ras Baraka, the mayor of Newark in New Jersey, clearly positions himself against Donald Trump’s migration policy. His protest even brought him an arrest.

In the United States, the Newark mayor was temporarily arrested in a protest against a migrant death center in the US state of New Jersey. Ras Baraka was guilty of the “broken fracture,” said the state prosecutor of the state of New Jersey, Alina Habba, on Friday in the online service X.

He was therefore briefly taken into custody. According to media reports, the democratic mayor-a declared opponent of US President Donald Trump and his migration policy-was released again in the evening.

Mayor of Newark was dissolved in handcuffs

Baraka had “ignored several warnings from the Ministry of Homeland, the ICE prison area in Newark, New Jersey, in the afternoon,” said Habba. He had “deliberately decided to disregard the law”.

The Democrat was seen in handcuffs on the back and surrounded by security forces published by US media. After his release, Baraka said that he “did nothing wrong”.

Baraka had visited the industrial area in Newark several times this week, where the recently reopened deportation center Delaney Hall is located by the ICE border protection authority. However, he was rejected by the federal police every time.

Protest against Donald Trump’s migration policy

In February, the ICE authority commissioned a company to convert the site that has been empty since 2023 into a deportation center for migrants with a thousand beds. The location near the Airport of Newark was elected to facilitate the deportations.

Most recently, the facility under ex-President Barack Obama was used to accommodate prisoners. The city of Newark accuses the new operator not to own a valid license.
