Majadahonda.- The former Spanish soccer player Gerard Piqué He denied this Friday having paid bribes to the former Spanish football hierarchy Luis Rubiales For the transfer of the Spanish Super Cup to Saudi Arabia, according to judicial sources.
The former Spanish International and Defense of Barcelona declared a judge in court in the outskirts of Madrid that investigates him in a case of possible corruption in the lucrative contracts that took the competition to the Gulf country in 2020.
In these contracts for 40 million euros (43.5 million dollars) per year a clause was included that guaranteed a commission of 4 million euros per year for Kosmos, the company of Piqué, when it still played with the Catalan team.
The May judicial order in which the imputation of Piqué was announced explained that the investigated facts “have their origin in the possible illegalities with criminal significance in the hiring of agreements” between the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and Saudi Arabia.
But Piqué denied this Friday having “paid anything to Rubiales or anyone from the RFEF,” according to judicial sources.
When his statement almost concluded, Piqué cried when referring to the “reputational damage” that this case has brought, the sources indicated.
“I am surprised that today,” information on this matter, said the former player.
The investigation to Piqué is derived from a cause against the former president of the RFEF, Luis Rubiales, for alleged corruption and alleged irregular contracts during his mandate, under which the agreement was signed to transfer the Super Cup.
