“Peru will not accept the violation of the popular will of the Venezuelan people,” says its foreign minister

LIME- Peruvian Foreign Minister Javier González-Olaechea announced on Sunday that he will call the Peruvian ambassador to Venezuela for consultation regarding the results announced by the electoral authority of that country, which declared dictator Nicolás Maduro the winner with 51.2% of the votes.

“In light of the very serious official announcements by the Venezuelan electoral authorities, the immediate recall of the Peruvian ambassador accredited to the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela has been arranged,” González-Olaechea said in X.

González-Olaechea also stated that “Peru will not accept the violation of the popular will of the Venezuelan people” and condemned the fraud by the Venezuelan regime.

Although many countries in the region have spoken out and requested a recount of votes to “guarantee transparency,” only Peru has announced that it would recall its ambassador to Caracas, which could lead to a diplomatic break with the dictatorship of Nicolás Maduro.

Since Chavismo took control of Venezuela more than 25 years ago, it is estimated that almost 8 million Venezuelans have left the country. Of that number, 1.5 million are estimated to be in Peru, the second nation that has received the most Venezuelan migrants, only surpassed by the more than 2 million who have arrived in Colombia.
