The Republican US presidential candidate Donald Trump attracted attention with verbal gaffes during the election campaign in the hotly contested state of Pennsylvania. At an appearance in Latrobe, the hometown of golf legend Arnold Palmer, Trump spoke extensively about the athlete, who died in 2016. “Arnold Palmer was a man through and through – and I say that with all respect for women,” said the 78-year-old. He added: “When he showered with other pros, they would come out and say, ‘Oh my God. This is unbelievable.’ The comment, which apparently referred to Palmer’s genitals, caused a stir.
Trump himself probably noticed that the shower comment about Palmer stood out and added a short time later: “I had to tell you the part about the shower because it’s true. And let’s be honest.” Palmer is a well-known name in the USA – a mixed drink made from iced tea and lemonade is named after him. Palmer began his career in the 1950s. Together with other stars such as Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player, he made golf popular among a wide audience in the 1960s.
Trump calls Harris a ‘shitty vice president’
The New York Times wrote about Trump’s performance: “Trump reaches new dimensions of vulgarity.” At the same rally, Trump also called Kamala Harris, his Democratic rival in the Nov. 5 presidential election, a “shitty vice president.” Harris responded to the statement in a TV interview: “The American people deserve much better.” The President of the United States must set a standard – “not only for our nation, but also for the standard that we as a nation must set for the world.” Trump’s behavior demeans the office of the president, said the 60-year-old.
