CARACAS.- The NGO Forum Penal reported that, in Venezuela, 87 political prisoners They have been in preventive detention for more than two years, which is irregular and contrary to the law.
“Of these 87 political prisoners, 57 already exceed the maximum exceptional period of 3 years in preventive detention. All have the immediate right to be released under precautionary measures,” said lawyer Gonzalo Himiob, vice president of the Penal Forum on his social networks.
On Wednesday night, June 10, the Penal Forum team in Caracas denounced that the authorities of the Rodeo I prison “do not accept the assignment documents” of lawyers from the NGO and send them to the Ministry of Justice.
The organization recalled that it accompanies the efforts of the relatives of political prisoners.
The president of the Penal Forum, Alfredo Romero, pointed out that until Tuesday night they had verified 15 releases of political prisoners.
Silence of the regime
The Provea organization pointed out that the Delcy Rodríguez administration does not respond to the UN regarding irregularities in the appointment of the attorney general, Larry Devoe, and the ombudsman, Eglée González Lobato.
“UN experts warn that the same people who do not meet required standards and against whom there are credible allegations of abuse of power and human rights violations, were successful in their applications for these positions,” they indicated.
In turn, Provea pointed out that this behavior of those in power is not new.
“It is not the first time, since June 2021, the Venezuelan State (regime) has only responded to one of the 24 communications received from the UN human rights mechanisms. Silence does not stop the process: on April 9, the National Assembly appointed the Defender and the Prosecutor illegitimately and with irregularities,” they pointed out.
