The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported Thursday that organic eggs sold at Costco are being recalled due to concerns that they may be contaminated with salmonella.
In a statement, the agency detailed that the New York company Handsome Brook Farms is recalling about 10,800 units of organic, pasture-raised eggs — sold in packages of 24 units — under Costco’s Kirkland Signature brand.
The affected egg cartons were sold at 25 Costco stores in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee as of November 22.
The recall applies only to units with Julian code 327 and an expiration date of January 6, 2025. No other products are affected by the recall.
This action came after Handsome Brook determined that eggs that were not destined for stores would be packaged and distributed in retail packages, according to the statement. Additional supply chain controls and training are being implemented to prevent this from happening again, he said.
To date, there have been no reports of illnesses. The recall is being done in cooperation with the FDA.
Affected consumers should stop using the product and return the affected units to their local Costco store for a full refund, or throw away the products.
