CARACAS — The Operation Southern Lanceannounced by the United States under the leadership of the Southern Command in the Caribbean, will strengthen the military capacity to “dismantle illicit trafficking networks” through a joint force led by the II Marine Expeditionary Mission and supported by maritime patrols, aerial surveillance and precision interceptions.
This was confirmed by the Pentagon in statements offered to NTN24reaffirming the strategic shift announced on Thursday by the Secretary of War, Pete Hegsethwho maintained that the mission’s purpose is to “expel drug traffickers from our hemisphere” and strengthen the nation’s defense against criminal organizations that operate from Latin America.
According to the Pentagon, the operation will be structured “around the headquarters of the II Marine Expeditionary Mission,” a structure that, according to what it noted, will allow “detect, dismantle and dismantle illicit trafficking networks more quickly and thoroughly”in coordination with US agencies and allied countries.
The institution specified that it is “a mainly maritime initiative”, supported by naval patrols, aerial surveillance, precision interceptions and an expanded flow of intelligence.
All of this, he pointed out, is aimed at combat illegal trafficking, support the rule of law and protect vulnerable communities within the United States.
“It is not an operation: it is a doctrine”
According to an analysis published by Infobaethe recent activation of Operation Lanza del Sur marks a profound change in the regional strategy against drug trafficking and terrorist organizations.
For Antonio De La Cruzpresident of Inter American Trends, this initiative should not be understood as just another deployment, but as a doctrinal change with far-reaching implications.
De La Cruz stated that “the United States has just moved a piece that will change the balance of the Caribbean for years: Operation Southern Spear (Southern Spear). It is not an operation: it is a doctrine”.
As he explained, this decision, which came directly from President Donald Trump, had an immediate response from the War Department and was under execution by the Southern Command.
The analyst maintains that this institutional triangle defines a clear message for criminal actors in the hemisphere. “A triangle of power that announces the essential thing: strategic patience with narcoterrorism is over”he pointed out.
This shift means that the enemy is no longer seen just as a cartel, but as a terrorist threat. For that reason, De La Cruz added that “when the US changes the name of your threat… your destiny changes.”
A new strategic fence
Operation Lanza del Sur, according to the analysis, is based on a “geometry of pressure” that combines fleets, radar systems, intelligence and the closure of routes used by criminal organizations. In the words of the specialist, it is “an advanced siege that leaves the Cartel of the Suns with only three options: flee, fracture or fall”.
This approach seeks to dismantle criminal networks from within, generating internal ruptures while applying sustained external pressure. “An operation designed to break the structure from within,” said De La Cruz.
Within this new security architecture, the Southern Caribbean becomes a strategic board with defined standards. The analyst summarizes it like this: “Exclusion zone for criminal actors. Red line for regimes that protect them. Strategic yard where the US once again marks territory.”
The warning to Maduro
The phrase that summarizes this operational logic, according to the analysis, is “Defend our Homeland” (Defend the Nation). This It implies that the United States will act outside its borders to neutralize threats before they reach its territory. De La Cruz clarified that this is not a reissue of the Cold War, but rather a “silent war of the 21st century: without missiles, without announcements, without uniforms. “Only surgical operations, legal precision and technological superiority.”
In this new scenario, the message addressed to the Nicolás Maduro regime is direct. “Status is no longer negotiated. Sanctions are not discussed. Survival is discussed,” De La Cruz warned the outlet. For the analyst, the campaign is already underway and is reconfiguring the Caribbean in front of the eyes of the region.
The specialist concludes with a forceful warning about the new American position against the Venezuelan regime and its criminal structures. “Maduro and the Cartel slept believing that the US was predictable. Today they discover that it moved first. And when a power moves first… the opponent is left without a board”, he stated.
