Sinnerswhich mixes a vampire plot with segregationism in the 1930s in the United States, won the categories of original screenplay, supporting actress (the British Wunmi Mosaku, born in Nigeria) and original music.
Three away from the record
One Battle After Anotherwith its six awards, could not beat the record for the most BAFTA awards in an edition held, since 1971, by the also American Two men and one destinywhich achieved nine.
“Unfortunately, the title (of the film) makes sense” today, Anderson said after the ceremony.
“It’s just starting to feel like one battle after another these days. But keep hoping,” he added.
Frankensteinby Mexican director Guillermo del Toro, took home three awards, out of the eight it was up for, in the categories of makeup and hair, production design and sound.
The Brazilian film The secret agentnominated for four Oscar statuettes, saw the Norwegian film win the best non-English film category sentimental value.
The Brazilian production also failed to win the award for best original script, which went to Sinners.
Brazil came with four candidates, also having Apocalypse in the Tropicsin best documentary, and Adolpho Veloso, in photography, for Dreams of Trembut these did not take the prize either.
The BAFTAs, considered a barometer before the Oscars – which will be awarded on March 15 – also left room for surprise by awarding the 33-year-old British actor Robert Aramayo with the best actor category for his role in I Swear (Uncontrollable), a social comedy about a young man with Tourette syndrome.
Aramayo beat the French-American Timothée Chalamet, favorite for this award, for his role in Marty Supreme and Leonardo DiCaprio (One Battle After Another).
“I can’t believe I won. I really can’t believe it,” the actor declared through tears.
Irishwoman Jessie Buckley won the best actress award for her performance in Hamneta British-American co-production.
Hamnet It was up for 11 awards, winning two, as it also won best British film.
The American film Marty Supremewhich was also up for 11 awards, did not win any.
Presence of William and Kate
