Number of displaced people in Lebanon due to the Israeli offensive exceeds one million

BEIRUT. – The Government of Lebanon reported this Monday that the number of displaced people as a result of the Israeli offensive has already exceeded one million people.

Specifically, there are already 1,049,329 people registered as displaced with the authorities, according to the Risk and Disaster Unit, dependent on the Presidency of the Lebanese Council of Ministers.

Of this figure, 132,742 are in the 622 reception centers set up by the authorities and the rest in private homes.

The Government also recalled that the latest balance sheet of the Ministry of Health death toll rises to 886 and injuries to 2,141 since the beginning of the last Israeli offensive, on March 2.

Likewise, the Lebanese authorities warned of an increase in the number of health workers affected by the attacks of Israel 38 were killed and 69 were injured within this group of professionals.

The president of Lebanon, Michel Aoun, stated this Monday that he hopes to make “progress” towards opening direct negotiations with Israel to try to end the Israeli military offensive.

“We hope to achieve decisive progress through the initiative we have launched,” Aoun said in statements reported by the Lebanese newspaper L’Orient-Le Jour.

Israel offensive

Lebanon was drawn into the conflict on March 2, when the Shiite movement attacked Israel in retaliation for the death of Iran’s supreme leader.

This Monday, Israel announced that it had undertaken “limited” ground operations against the pro-Iran group Hezbollah in Lebanon. This while USA pressures major powers to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz, blocked by Iran.

The Israeli Army reported that in recent days it has undertaken “limited and selective ground operations against key strongholds” of Hezbollah in the area. They argued that these are “defensive efforts” aimed at “eliminating terrorists operating in the area.”
