No more ‘Cheetos fingers’? Versions without artificial colors announced amid FDA reviews

The food and beverage company PepsiCo announced this Thursday a new line of its Cheetos and Doritos that it said no longer has synthetic colors or artificial flavors.

The line is called Simply NKD, in reference to the English word for naked.

“We are reinventing our famous and iconic brands to offer options that maintain the flavors preferred by fans but without artificial colors or flavorings,” said Hernán Tantardini, marketing manager for PepsiCo, in a statement.

Although the company did not reference the issue when announcing the NKD line, earlier this year it said it would accelerate its ingredient adjustments after agencies such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have placed greater focus on ingredients such as artificial colors.

For example, this summer after a review of several months the FDA banned the use of red dye number 5. And the Secretary of Health, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

In recent years, concerns have grown among some food consumers and scientists about the impact that repeated consumption of artificial coloring could have on child development, although there are still no results from clinical analyzes that point to any harm.

The Simply NKD line will consist of Doritos Nacho Cheese and Doritos Cool Ranch products, and Cheetos Puffs and Cheetos Flamin’ Hot. They will go on sale starting December 1.

The new versions of these snacks still have some color. In September, PepsiCo had announced that it was carrying out experiments with ingredients such as paprika, turmeric or radishes to obtain the shades known to consumers of these potatoes. It is unclear at this time if the Simply NKD line will use these ingredients.
