US President-elect Donald Trump has intervened in the debate about a series of suspected drone sightings on the American east coast. “Mysterious drone sightings across the country. Can this really happen without our government’s knowledge? I don’t believe it,” Trump wrote on the platform he co-founded, Truth Social. “Inform the public immediately. Otherwise they will be shot down!” he demanded.
For days there have been reports and discussions about possible drones in the skies of the US East Coast. “We know that New Yorkers have spotted drones in the air this week and we are investigating,” said New York Governor Kathy Hochul. “There is currently no evidence that these drones pose a threat to public or national security.”
According to consistent media reports, the mysterious phenomenon began in November over the neighboring state of New Jersey, when an unmanned flying object was spotted near a military facility. As a result, more and more cases became known. Videos of the mysterious bright lights in the sky are spreading rapidly on social media, sparking heated speculation. Theories online range from espionage to secret military exercises to extraterrestrial life.
Government tries to appease
However, among many alleged false sightings, there have been a number of cases where people claim to have seen actual drones the size of cars. Former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan also wrote on Platform X that he had seen (and filmed) dozens of large drones in the sky above his residence in Davidsonville, Maryland. The authorities need to do more to clear up the matter.
The government of current President Joe Biden is concerned, but also emphasized that there is no indication so far that foreign powers are involved in the incidents or that the national security of the United States is at risk. The cases have not yet been confirmed by the federal authorities.
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas appeared on CNN specifically to appease. “We are not aware of any threat or nefarious activity,” he said. It often happens that “people who think they see drones actually see small airplanes.” Young people could also buy a drone and fly it into the sky.
