morning star What the Union and SPD are now planning when it comes to military service

The coalition has settled its dispute over military service – what is known about it. US shutdown ended. And: The strange year-end rally by the Union and SPD. The situation in the morning.

Good morning, dear readers,

Military service or not? Lottery or not? The Union and the SPD have been arguing about the future of the Bundeswehr for weeks. Now they say they have reached an agreement. This information leaked out once, but then the dispute continued. But now the time has actually come. The coalition factions should be informed about the details at 8 a.m., followed by the public.

Coalition agrees on model for new military service

The media and news agencies are already reporting on key points of the agreement. Accordingly The model now agreed provides for the mustering of the entire cohort of young men. If there are not enough volunteers among those found fit Military service find, it should then be decided by lot who has to join the Bundeswehr. The double lottery process – drawing those who have to go into military service and then drawing those who are doing military service – should be off the table.

The Federal Defense Minister’s proposed law Boris Pistorius (SPD) stipulates that entire cohorts of 18-year-olds should be sampled from mid-2027. But there should be no compulsion to serve. Is this confirmed? We’ll find out as the day goes on.

What was it like for you: Were you in the Bundeswehr? Or did you do community service or a voluntary year? And would you do that again today? Feel free to write to me: thomas.krause@stern.de
