Major League Baseball (MLB) announced this Wednesday the seven-game suspension for the Dominican pitcher Reynaldo Lopezof the Atlanta Braves, and the Cuban designated hitter Jorge Solerof the Los Angeles Angels, after his participation in the fight that cleared the benches during Tuesday’s game at Angel Stadium. Both were also fined an undisclosed amount and appealed the sanction.
The brawl broke out in the bottom of the fifth inning, after a high and hard pitch from López that provoked the immediate reaction of Soler, who did not hesitate to run towards the mound. What began with an exchange of glances quickly ended in an exchange of blows that forced players, coaches and members of both dugouts to intervene.
What happened between Reynaldo López and Jorge Soler?
The atmosphere was already hot before the incident. In his first at-bat, Jorge Soler homered off Reynaldo López, and was later also hit by a pitch from the Atlanta right-hander. When the fifth inning arrived, another dangerous pitch, this time too close to the head, ended up lighting things up.
Soler interpreted the sequence as something intentional and decided to face the pitcher directly. López raised his hands at first, but seconds later both began throwing punches in one of the most tense scenes of this young 2026 MLB season.
One of the most shocking details of the altercation was that Reynaldo López threw punches while still holding the ball in his hand, an image that quickly went viral among fans and sports media.
MLB punishes harshly: seven games and fine for both
Hours after the confrontation, MLB confirmed the official punishment: seven-game suspension for both players, in addition to a financial fine, the amount of which was not publicly disclosed. The sanction was announced by Michael Hill, MLB’s senior vice president of on-field operations.
However, both López and Soler appealed the decision, which in principle temporarily freezes the sanction while the disciplinary process is resolved. ESPN also reported that Lopez had already reached an agreement to reduce his punishment to five games, which would allow him to serve it without missing a start thanks to a day off on Atlanta’s schedule. That point was not confirmed by MLB in its official statement.
Walt Weiss was also a protagonist in the fight
Another of the most striking moments of the altercation was the intervention of Walt Weiss, Atlanta’s interim coach/manager in the game, who literally knocked down Jorge Soler to try to stop the fight.
The scene drew attention because Weiss and Soler maintain a close relationship from their shared time in Atlanta. In fact, after the game, it was learned that the veteran member of the Braves coaching staff acted more as a containment than an aggressor, seeing that the situation was getting out of control.
Braves beat Angels after the fight
Beyond the chaos on the diamond, the game continued and ended with a 7-2 victory for the Atlanta Braves over the Los Angeles Angels. The incident occurred when Atlanta already dominated the score 4-2, and the Braves later extended the lead to secure the victory.
The game left a mix of tension, spectacle and controversy, but it also reopened the debate about intentional pitching, the safety of hitters and the way in which MLB should handle these types of confrontations.
Reynaldo López vs Jorge Soler: an unexpected rivalry
The curious fact is that Reynaldo López and Jorge Soler were recently colleagues, which adds even more morbidity to what happened. Additionally, Soler has had notable dominance over López in their head-to-head confrontations, a statistic that likely also fueled the tension in the game.
What happened in Anaheim is already shaping up to be one of the most memorable fights at the start of the 2026 MLB season, especially due to the intensity of the match, the context of the game and the media weight of both Latin players.
