JUAREZ CITY — A agent Mexican migrant worker was murdered this Monday in the northern Ciudad Juárez, on the border with the United States, when he asked a group of migrants to identify himself, reported the authorities, who have already detained three alleged suspects in the crime.
The attack occurred around 12:30 p.m. local time (7:30 p.m. GMT), when the agent was “attacked by a group of foreigners when he asked for their identification documents” at a checkpoint located “on steep terrain,” the National Institute detailed. of Migration (INM) in a statement.
A combined operation of local and federal police made it possible to locate, about three hours later, the alleged murderers of the public servant, one of them a Colombian national and the other two from Venezuela, the INM added.
The victim was found at the scene of the attack with “an injury to the head area, without vital signs and with signs of violence,” according to a statement from the Security Secretariat of Chihuahua, the state where Ciudad Juárez is located.
The three suspects were placed at the disposal of the judicial authorities and an investigation folder was opened on the case, added the Mexican immigration authority.
The crime of the border agent occurs less than a month before the inauguration of the next US president, Donald Trump, whose announced anti-immigrant policy has increased uncertainty among thousands of foreigners who arrive at the border, hoping to cross into that country. The policy of the Democratic administration of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris has allowed the encounter of more than 11 million migrants from January 2021 to date.
Trump has promised to declare a state of emergency in the United States and call on the army to carry out a mass deportation of migrants as soon as he takes office on January 20. The focus will be against migrants who have committed crimes in the United States.
The 78-year-old Republican magnate, who describes the entry of migrants without a visa across the border with Mexico as an “invasion,” warns that it will be “the largest deportation operation in the history of the United States.”
