Merz travels to Paris for confidential meetings with Macron

Three days after his election victory, Union Chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz (CDU) traveled to Paris for a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron. Macron welcomes Merz for a dinner, the Elysée Palace said on Wednesday evening. Previously, several German media had reported confidential dinner, a CDU spokeswoman did not want to publicly confirm or deny it. Merz had repeatedly announced in the election campaign to work as a chancellor for better Franco-German relationships.

In addition to bilateral questions, the meeting should also deal with the international situation. Macron informed the European Union heads of state and government on the results of his meeting with US President Donald Trump in Washington on Wednesday. For Germany, the incumbent Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) took part.

Macron had advised Trump in the White House on Monday about his planned negotiations with the Russian head of state Vladimir Putin. The French president then spoke of a “common” path with Trump. However, there are still large differences between the USA and Europe on central points.

CDU boss Merz is a decisive supporter of the Franco-German engine for the further development of Europe. In the past, he had repeatedly accused Scholz of neglecting relationships with Paris.
