Merz to US tariffs: German economy becomes "take considerable damage"

According to the fundamental agreement in the customs dispute between the USA and the EU, Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) warned of severe negative consequences for the German economy. “The German economy will take significant damage through these tariffs,” he said in Berlin on Monday afternoon.

At the same time, the extent will not remain limited to Germany and Europe, “we will also see the consequences of this trade policy in America,” continued Merz. So not only a higher inflation rate is to be feared, but the tariffs should also “affect transatlantic trade overall”.

The United States and the EU had announced the agreement on a trade agreement on the Sunday after months of hard negotiations, which according to US President Donald Trump provides 15 percent inches for most EU products. This is less than the 30 percent threatened by Trump, but significantly more than before his customs offensive. In addition, the EU is said to buy significantly more US liquid gas and European companies should invest in the United States.

However, many detailed questions about the agreement remained unclear or at least unclear, such as the customs level on the EU page, which will be due in the future when importing from the USA. The outlines of the fundamental cleaning already appeared to many observers highly one -sided – to the detriment of the Europeans.

With the compromise found, he is “not satisfied in the sense of ‘that is a good thing now’,” said Merz. He added: “This result cannot satisfy us, but it was the best thing to achieve in the given situation.” More was obviously not available in view of the starting point with the United States.
