Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) relies on close cooperation with US President Donald Trump in the end of the Ukraine War. It is “of outstanding importance that the political West cannot be split,” said Merz on Wednesday in a government declaration in the Bundestag. He would therefore “take all efforts to continue to establish the greatest possible unity between the European and the American partners”.
Merz pointed out that he had called Trump twice in the past few days. “I am grateful for his support for the initiative for a 30-day unconditional ceasefire,” said the Chancellor. This could “open a window in which peace negotiations are possible”.
