Merz: Freedom of expression and independence of the judiciary in the USA are under pressure

Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) has commented on the state of democracy in the United States. “This country has changed so fundamentally over the past few years and maybe decades that rules are no longer being met, the parliamentary democracy is under pressure, freedom of expression is questioned and repression of the judiciary is exercised,” said Merz on Friday at an event in Berlin.

The changes “did not come overnight and they won’t go again during the day,” added the Chancellor: “You won’t suddenly disappear with the next elections.”

Merz emphasized that he wanted to ensure that at least we in the Federal Republic of Germany and together with our European partners in the European Union are an open, liberal, democratic, market economy and above all free society “.

US President Donald Trump has been an unprecedented way against the media and political opponents since taking office in January. Since the fatal assassination attempt on the ultra -right activist Charlie Kirk, his government has tightened the gait against critics even further. Trump sued the “New York Times” to $ 15 billion (around 12.7 billion euros) due to alleged defamation.

Trump also welcomed the broadcaster ABC to temporarily dismiss the late night show by satirist Jimmy Kimmel. Kimmel had criticized the reaction of the Trump environment to the Kirk attack. The president also demanded two other satirists to delete the programs.

On Thursday, the US judiciary brought charges against the Trump critic and former FBI boss James Comey for alleged “serious crimes”. The US President, who only publicly asked the Ministry of Justice a few days ago to act against Comey and other adversaries, welcomed the step and expressed hope that there will be further proceedings against his opponents.
