To obtain good pieces, it is essential to deliver others. That has been the vision of the high command of the Miami Marlins in recent times and it was reflected again this past weekend, when they pulled the trigger on an unusual transaction between teams in the same division.
The fish came from Venezuelan starter Jesús Luzardo and minor league catcher Paul McIntosh in a transaction with the Philadelphia Phillies that allowed the South Florida team to add two promising pieces to its ranks: the Dominican Starlyn Caba and the American Emaarion Boyd.
Caba, just 19 years old, was ranked as the Quakers’ fourth best prospect by MLB Pipeline experts and is also positioned at number 81 among the 100 most promising gems in all of baseball today.
The shortstop, who immediately claimed third place in the Marlins’ promising rankings, became the team’s fourth player in the recognized “Top 100”, along with Thomas White, Noble Meyer and Agustín Ramírez.
In just his second season as a professional, the Dominican hit a .228 average, with seven doubles, a triple and two home runs, in addition to registering 26 RBIs, 57 runs scored and 50 stolen bases in 78 games played between the “rookie” and “rookie” categories. Class A Marlins in 2024.
Among the best in its class
Caba was considered one of the best prospects available in the 2023 international class and performed as expected in his debut in the Dominican Republic Summer League, with an offensive line of .301/.423/.346 in 38 comparisons.
“When we acquire young players, it all comes down to what we expect from them in the future,” said Peter Bendix, Miami’s president of baseball operations, in statements to the club’s official website.
